Unnatural Selection
How do stories become myths? In these images, at once iconic and jarring, Matthews reflects on the layers of desire, despair, and dreams that shape myth. On her impossibly slender legs and perpetually arched feet, Barbie carries hidden dreams no less grand than Ophelia and Eve. Replacing flesh and blood with unyielding, unnaturally moulded plastic, Matthews asks us to reflect on personhood, womanhood and where reality and fantasy meet.
